What is Cryotherapy and what does it treat?
CryoPen™ is an advanced cryotherapy innovation that is a fast, effective, safe and new solution for the removal of skin imperfections. Procedures typically last from 5 to 25 seconds, so you can be in and out of the salon quickly.
The CryoPen™ emits a fine jet of nitrous oxide under high pressure, which allows the clinician to work with millimeter precision. This destroys the tissue by freezing the inter-cellular fluid, forming ice shards and crystals that rupture the membrane, thereby destroying the cell. That means there will be no collateral damage to healthy tissue. It’s so incredibly accurate and practical.
Cosmetic procedures such as skin tags, milia and cherry angiomas are no longer being treated by many doctors on the NHS. With the CryoPen™ you can now have these treatments in the beauty salon.
How does Cryotherapy work?
First cycle – freeze
The applicator is held as close as possible to the skin imperfection and moved quickly towards and away from it. This could be from 1-30 seconds, depending on the size and depth.
Thaw
After the first freeze cycle, the tissue is allowed to thaw for about 30 seconds.
Second Cycle – Freeze
Now the second freeze cycle will begin. The tissue will freeze faster than during the first freezing cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Duration Of Treatment?
The type and size of the lesion will determine how long the treatment will last and how many treatments you will need before seeing results.
However, the treatment procedure only takes 2 to 30 seconds for a typical, superficial, benign lesion.
When Can I Expect to See Results?
You will likely see results in 1 to 6 weeks after starting treatment.
In some cases, due to the size and type of lesion, you may be advised to another treatment to eradicate any leftover signs of the lesion.
Is The Procedure Painful?
Upon reaching the root of the lesion, the nitrous oxide will provide a slight sensation on the skin.
There may be some residual stinging for a few minutes following the process, and the area may be mildly irritating for around 10 minutes,
The intense cold has an anaesthetic effect on most patients.
Is There a Difference In The Area Following Treatment?
- The area freezes and becomes white during treatment. Flushing occurs after the white area thaws the area turns red and a weal forms.
- The weal may turn into a blister within 2-24 hours of being frozen; however, this is quite rare.
- A crust develops typically over lesions after 10 to 14 days.
- The skin will subsequently mend itself as a result.
- After a few weeks, the skin may seem lighter or pink. Leg lesions often take a little longer to heal than other areas of the body.
- Larger lesions may develop a second crust, extending the healing time.
- You should avoid picking at the crust, as this might cause scarring.
- You should dress any areas prone to rubbing or discomfort with a plaster.
Will There Be Scarring?
Rarely. Hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation are known to come and go in the aftermath of the Cryopen treatment.
It typically takes a few months to see the effects pass.
Individuals with darker skin tones are more likely to develop pigmentary change.
What Areas Can Be Treated?
Many types of benign skin growths, including viral warts, seborrhoeic keratosis, and other benign lesions, can be treated using cryotherapy.
However, a correct diagnosis is required before treatment since we will not treat any malignant lesions.
Your GP will tell you if a lesion looks suspected of skin cancer, and you should seek their guidance.
